James Domestic is SAD, but you needn’t be!
James Domestic entered his annual hibernation period this week. As a long-term sufferer of acute Seasonal Affective Disorder, he doesn’t gig at all – either as a poet, a DJ, or with his band, The Domestics – during November, December, January or February, and we miss him. But what a year it’s been for this Earth Island punk poet!
His new book, …Is an Acquired Taste, with a foreword by Attila The Stockbroker and illustrations by cartoonist, poet, and TV comedy writer Andy Riley (Black Books, Big Train, Smack The Pony, and many more) was published, he performed his Poetry for People Who Think They Don’t Like Poetry! show twice at Colchester Fringe Festival, he supported Attila The Stockbroker (again) and Henry Normal (poet, TV writer on The Mrs Merton Show, The Royle Family, and a bunch of Steve Coogan’s projects) at Foreword Festival.
He also performed at Hastings Book Festival, and in various cities and towns around the country. He says he was “chuffed to bits” when the aforementioned Henry Normal called him “A powerhouse of performance poetry”, and also when the legendary Roger McGough borrowed his music stand which had one of Domestic’s I’m In a Sexed-Up Werthers Original Hell! stickers on the back!
If you’re already familiar with Domestics’ work, then you will find ‘Is an Acquired Taste’ keeps up with his high standards – quite possibly his best book yet.
If you’re not yet acquainted, you’ll find it an excellent place to start! It’s funny, heartfelt, surreal, and a bit rude here and there… in other words, a very entertaining read!
