Oh, please take me back…
Tim Grayson of Vive Le Rock reviews new books ‘Punk at Sea’ and ‘Voice of a Generation’
Rebellion has barely finished for another year but we have this Earth Island photo book to remind us of all the good, bad, funny, and ugly aspects of the world's greatest punk festival. Put together by Amsterdam based photographer and journalist, Michel Blijboom, his love of punk, Blackpool and Rebellion shines through on its 120 plus pages, where he chronicles the sights sounds and faces of the festival. There are lots of people you will recognise from the bands like Cockney Rejects and of course the UK Subs king Charlie Harper, but this book is about the punters, the people that make Rebellion so colourful and unique. Grab a copy to see if you are in it!
While some may frown upon the second wave of punk and the UK82 scene it was a huge avalanche of punk rock rebellion and creative energy, spawning hundreds of great bands and an army of punks all over the world. Marquis HK’s excellent memoir chronicles many of their stories in their own words. A very personal punk history that collects heartfelt memories of UK82's survivors. Tales of the King's Road, the Southall riot, the very first Holidays in the Sun Festival, and later on Rebellion Festival. Memories from those mohicans that appeared on postcards and are still spiking their hair today, and bands like Chaos UK, Disorder, Dek Drongo and Drongoes for Europe that soundtracked it. People who never gave in, because their punk is for life and not just a passing phase. Riot City and the Bristol and Brum scene are covered, and the likes of Varukers and Dog Flesh pay tribute to some of the fallen punks who have passed away through the years. You will probably recognise a lot of these faces; Jenny Gallagher, Dave Ferguson, Anne Marie, Cinzia, Michelle and Jow. Larger than life, every colour of the rainbow. Full on leather, bristles and studs. All tell their stories in their own cider-soaked words. What a wild, adrenaline fuelled ride it was. Oh, please take me back…
