This Is My Everything

Starting a band is a lot like a romantic relationship. You spend time together, find that common spark, and live through emotions and experiences. You create music together. Songs, lyrics, entire records. You find a name for your band. Each member contributes to creating something uniquely your own. Then there's also the other side of the medal: fights, breakups, broken hearts. The entire emotional bandwidth of a relationship is contained within the complicated inner workings of a band.

This Is My Everything’ is about one forgotten screamo band's travels into and out of the worldwide DIY hardcore scene in the late nineties and early noughties, with guest appearances by Against Me!, Shelter, Refused, Ink&Dagger, Yaphet Kotto, Snapcase and many more.

Fabe was still pretty active in Tübingen's DIY punk scene, so through him we got toplay the reunion gig at the infamous Epplehaus, where we had played several times inour heyday. We had rehearsed enough to get a good set together, made up of a mix of songs from allour records over the six years of Tidal's existence. On the day of the show, we weresurprised with a venue that was packed to the brim. Old friends were there, some family, but also members of a new generation of punk kids, some of whom knew Tidal onlyfrom hearsay, as they were still children when we actively played. That was both radand weird, realizing that we were actually old now. The soundcheck went alright, butFabe and me worried a bit about the drums maybe not being loud and powerful enough.

Epplehaus is a medium sized club so the drums usually aren't mic'ed. Early on, that was never a problem for Tidal, as the drums were always the loudest instrument and we had to adjust everything else to their natural volume. Now we weren't so sure. At 10pm we got on the stage. The audience seemed excited, but we were sort of nervous.Could we still deliver like we used to? We started the set with We Are Out of Step from the Moment LP, and after the intro, once the song kicked in, I was amazed how loud and energetic the drums sounded. I turned around and saw that Julian had changed the thin jazz sticks for thick ones. He'd changed his mind right before the show. What agreat surprise! He really pushed us forward like in our best days, and the show turned out amazing. No signs of ageing at all in the performance, if I may say so myself. The gig ended up being one of the best ones, if not the best one, we ever played.
