Hello Cherry review Hardcore Horror
When the dark underworld of punk rock and the hardcore scene intersects with the darkest registers of literary horror, the result can only be raw, loud and uncompromising. The anthology Hardcore Horror: A Collection of Horrific Short Stories, edited by Tim Cundle and published by the prestigious independent publisher Earth Island Books, takes us directly to the heart of the underground, where impossible futures, terrifying present and gruesome pasts collide in the literary ether. This collection brings 23 short stories written by active members of hardcore, punk and alt-rock bands, as well as recognisable figures of the alternative scene. Instead of the usual clichés we're used to in mainstream horror, Hardcore Horror offers an authentic insight into the underworld, where fear is measured not only by supernatural monsters, but also by the raw, existential horrors that lurk on the fringes of society.
Tim Cundle managed to assemble a team of authors who approach horror from the most diverse angles, from body-horror, psychological thrillers and dystopian science fiction, all the way to raw, street realism imbued with a dark satirical note. The stories in the collection do not protect the reader. The rawness and authenticity is an added bonus because the authors of this collection do not write about fear from comfortable cabinets, but they conjure up the darkness that comes from lived experience, from tours, from empty streets, alienation and catharsis that comes from doing independent music. A wide range of horrors grace this collection. Whether it's nightmarish visions of a future where technology has taken control of the human spirit, or intimate, gory tales of revenge and madness, each story works like a separate, miniature thriller. Of course, there is also stylistic pluralism as the expression varies from quick punches of just a few pages, to more complex, atmospheric stories that gently build tension before finally knocking you out.
With this edition, Earth Island Books has once again confirmed its position as a key haven for authentic, countercultural literature. The Hardcore Horror collection demonstrates how the underground scene has an incredible narrative potential that goes beyond the musical framework itself. Editor Tim Cundle has done a superb job of selecting authors who may not be part of the mainstream literary establishment, but possess something much more important, an attitude, a voice and an absolute lack of fear of experimentation. Hardcore Horror is not a book for the faint of heart or those looking for the usual, set-pieces. This is a collection for lovers of raw words and darkness that has something to say. Jump into this literary mosh-pit, let your imagination run wild, and step into a world of horror you never knew existed. Earth Island Books has delivered a true underground masterpiece that reads in one go and keeps the lights in the room from going out so easily.
