What to do on a rainy evening in Mull?...

If you lived up on the Isle of Mull in the West of Scotland and it was a stormy evening you might well wonder what to do with yourself, but last night there was an easy answer with a great and hearty gathering at Castle Duart for the launch of Ray Canham's excellent new book of darkly humourous short stories, 'The Weight Of Sin'.

Local papers The Oban Times and West Coast Today were both in attendance, along with plenty of friends and locals, to hear Ray read a few excerpts from his latest novel and sign copies for the buyers.

West Coast Today reported: "Ray Canham makes use of his ability to paint vivid characters and worlds very well. From the insanity of ‘Cheese and pickle sandwiches’ to the eerily mundane life of the parents in ‘The Wilderness’ his writing will not leave you wanting. The weight of scene opens with Burton coggles the life story of a man by the same name a comedian in a variety show during the post war era and the character whose world is revisited multiple times. if you're a fan of dad jokes it's certainly the story for you, but the tonal shifts between stories give every type of reader something to enjoy."

A collection of stories both humorous and horrific, brimming with stygian absurdity and unexpected twists, ‘The Weight of Sin’ will haunt your dreams long after you’ve finished reading the final page…

Whether it’s the pathos of a fading music hall star reflecting on his career, the droll elderly couple who harbour a dire secret that has locked them in an inescapable routine, the mysterious civil servant in a post-apocalyptic wasteland, or the not-too-distant, dystopian future UK that’s chillingly easy to visualise, these tales are a rare and devilishly delicious delight to be savoured and enjoyed, but beware, they’re not for the faint of heart or those of a nervous disposition.

Read them if you dare, but don’t say that we didn’t warn you…
